Reflection

My project turned out okay, but I'm still a little conflicted about whether or not I failed 20 time.

I was really motivated when I first started it. I was so excited to work on the project, to make it a success, to raise money, and to help people across the world from me. But as the year went on, 20 time got pushed to the back burner. My "real" classes became a lot more labor-intensive, and it was difficult to give a project that would never even be really graded my full attention. It sounds awful, and is more than a little ironic to say this, but I got distracted raising money for women's education to focus on my own grades.

I had this assumption throughout the year that when I finally had to sit down and write the speech, I would know exactly what I learned over the course of the project. I thought that there would be an epiphany of sorts, and I'd have a killer speech right there.

Well. That obviously did not happen. While I know I've learned things over the course of the school year, I feel as if I haven't learned anything because of 20 time. I feel pretty bad about it, but it's true. I've worried over this problem for three weeks, but I still can't think of anything that people should know that I've figured out. This is pretty alarming to me: I've almost never encountered a problem I couldn't solve. But how are you supposed to figure out what you learned?

Which leads me to my talk. I plan on talking about how we learn, how learning affects our lives, and how it affected my (inability) to learn on my project. Basically, I'm talking about how I didn't learn anything through 20 time, and therefore failed it.

I think next year it would actually be better if we had to do blog posts every week. In all honesty, they were kind of annoying to do. However, I think that I would have done more towards my project and focused more if I had to do one every week rather than cramming everything in last minute so I could write something down. It also would have been nice in a way if we were required to keep up with everyone else's posts (commenting etc). It kind of bothered me that I had no idea what my classmates were doing for their project, partially because I didn't have the time to look at their posts. If it were required I think everyone would have a better idea of what others were doing, and it would have been nice to know people were keeping track of what you were doing also.

Almost finished

The Readathon finished about two weeks ago!

I'm so glad I actually finished my 20 time project. However, I still have no idea how much money it made because the principal hasn't gotten back to me. I sent him a few emails about counting money, or if it's already counted, how much it has made, but I still haven't received a reply. It's a little frustrating because I really want to know, and I'm not sure how often I should email him before it's just badgering. I'm sure it will work out eventually, but right now it's a little aggravating.

Right now I have to work on the big speech at the end. In all honesty, I'm not really sure what to talk about. We're supposed to talk about what we learned doing this project. I know that I learned A LOT from this project, but I'm not sure how to put it into words and make it sound like a genuine Ted Talk.

Over the next week, I'll probably brainstorm some ideas for the talk, as well as figuring out how to phrase what I learned. Hopefully, I'll have gotten a response and will know how much the Readathon raised.

It actually happened!

The Readathon has been going on for about a week now, and I'm so happy everything worked out! I was so concerned that I got started on my project too late, but it looks like everything is going fine.

The teachers passed out the forms etc to the students two Thursdays ago (March 12th) and the Readathon officially began on the 16th. There's only about a week left, as it ends on the 27th, and I hope that that's enough time to raise $1,000!

The only thing I'm worried about is the matching/sponsorship. I really hope that enough students found enough sponsors, who in turn matched enough money to reach the goal of $1,000! Other than that, it looks like the Readathon is going smoothly.

All the same, I'm excited for when the Readathon ends next week and I can donate the money. I'm still so happy/relieved/excited that it actually happened!

Next Week!

I finished the parent letter, the pledge form, and the reading log for the Readathon. It took me longer than I first expected, mostly because I was so anxious about getting it right. The parent letter is going to be emailed to every single parent in the school, and I'm a little worried about sounding stupid or naive in front of half of my neighborhood.

Tomorrow, the teachers will pass out the forms. I made a "script" for the teachers so they can explain the Readathon and its purpose to the students, but I'm nervous that the little kids won't find any sponsors (and therefore the project won't raise any money). I contacted Hungry Howie's, and they promised to give pizza to the class that raises the most money. I hope that a Pizza Party is a good enough incentive for the kids to work on the project!

Now that the pre-Readathon planning is done, I'm going to email some authors. Hopefully some will be able to read the school their books via Skype as part of the Readathon.

Almost There

My meeting with the principal of Trombly went really well! He was excited about the Readathon and gave me some good suggestions about moving forward.

One of his ideas was to email authors. Some will read their books to school over Skype. I'm going to email the Trombly librarians to see what books elementary students are interested, then email the authors that match up on both lists.

I also want to find a corporate sponsor. I'm going to CALL companies, because emailing has been fruitless so far. It's been really difficult finding corporations to "match" money raised, especially since I (for obvious reasons) don't work at any huge companies, and my parents and extended family members don't either.

This upcoming week, I'm going to the staff and PTO meetings at Trombly so I can present my idea. Over break, I made a powerpoint that outlines what the project is, when the Readathon will happen, how the teachers/PTO will tie into it, and when the Readathon will happen. Right now, I'm looking at March 9th through March 20th, which is about two weeks away.

I'm a little nervous, but at the same time I'm really excited to move forward on the Readathon!

More progress

I am now hosting the readathon at Trombly. I'm really excited because not only is my project back on track, but I went to Trombly for elementary school. It's going to be really weird coming back!

Trombly does a big school-wide event for "March is Reading Month" where the whole school reads a book. This should make it pretty easy to raise money with a readathon. Next week, I'm meeting with the principal to talk about the project. It's getting pretty close to March, which means that I really have to get working if I'm going to raise a lot of money with this.

Procrastination

This is going to sound really bad, but I haven't been focusing on my 20 Time project over the last two weeks. We had midterms this past week, and I spent most of my time studying. To be honest, I'm still a little brain dead from the exams. To make things worse, I had a swim meet all this weekend!

I finally emailed some of the elementary schools, and I'm hoping to hear back from them over the next week. I'm getting a little worried about my project: I have no idea what I'm going to do if I can't find a school to host the Readathon. I really hope one of the schools can host it!
